Larry J. Richards was born on April 21, 1973. He grew up and was raised on a farm near Hope, N.D. where he attended school. He proudly notes that he graduated Hope High School in 1992 with honors and was 3rd in his class. Of course, they only had 9 students in his graduating class.

He attended the University of North Dakota (UND) located in Grand Forks, ND where he majored in both Political Science and History as well as a minor in Geography. In 1996, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from UND with his Bachelor of Arts degree.

At a crossroads, Larry had two paths before him in 1996. He applied to only the University of North Dakota School of Law and vowed if he didn't get in he would choose his other path---work in a pipe factory in Fargo, ND. Fate along with the Admissions Committee choose law as Larry's calling and he has never looked back....at least not very often.

In 1999, he received his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of North Dakota School of Law. While in law school, he was a published member of the North Dakota Law Review.

Upon graduation, he became the only member of his law school class to starting his own law practice immediately after graduating law school, which he purchased from Attorney Lyle Moe. For a few years, Thomas B. Jelliff, a former State's Attorney for Grand Forks County, practiced with Larry until Tom's death in 2003. Those early years in practice provided a plethera of experience in numerous areas of law..and a TON OF STORIES.

After being on his own for a number of years, Larry sought a new experience and joined the Spaeth & Thelen law firm in Grand Forks, ND. This provided even more opportunities. While a member of this firm he worked part-time as a public defender in the North Dakota counties of Grand Forks, Nelson, and Walsh. He also represented Respondents in Mental Health proceedings. Eventually, the four attorney firm dissolved. One passed away (Mr. Spaeth in 2006), another got a better job in 2007, and eventually Mr. Thelen became a Magistrate Judge/Judicial Referee for Grand Forks County District Court in 2009.

Alone once again, Larry resumed practice on his own. When he did so, Larry rededicating himself to serving his clients to the best of his ability---always keeping their interests his number one priority. He also vowed to serve his community and a growing family. He is a past President of the Grand Forks Lions Club (2010-11) and volunteers his time weekly as defense counsel for the Grand Forks County Adult Drug Court. He is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association and is scheduled to become the President of the organization in 2015.

Let Larry go to work for you by using his skill, experience, and dedication to help you should you need an attorney in and around northeast North Dakota.

WAR STORIES

This section is dedicated to telling one of the many, many interesting legal related stories from Larry's past files. Names are changed to protect confidentiality.

Back in the days when I was a public defender, I was appointed to defend a man charged with assault during a bar fight. We tried for a plea bargain, but the Judge saw his lengthy criminal record and pretty much said he was going to have to sentence him to in excess of three years in jail. My client said "no way".

Throughout the trial, my client and his family were all over me and constantly complaining about this and that as well as my strategy. It was a hard case. Ultimately he was found "not guilty". My client was elated. When he thanked me, he said "Thanks Dan". Here I just helped keep him out of jail for at least three years and he didn't even know my name!! Sigh....
