On this date in 1914, Justice Paul Sand of the North Dakota Supreme Court was born in Balta, ND. After graduating from the North Dakota School of Law in 1941, Sand was inducted into the U.S. Army and served the next six years in the European Theatre in various positions within the military justice system, including trial judge advocate, assistant staff judge advocate and service on the War Crimes Commission. After leaving the service as a lieutenant colonel in 1947, he was in private practice in Rugby, N.D. briefly before becoming an Assistant Attorney General (1949-1963) and then First Assistant Attorney General (1963-1974) for the State of North Dakota. In 1974, he was elected to the North Dakota Supreme Court where he had almost a decade of service before dying in office on December 8, 1984. Justice Sand is remembered for his legal knowledge, love of baseball and bowties, passion for growing roses, and his gentle spirit.
